Rock 11: Cave Cove Rock ~ July 31 2015 ~ San Simeon CA

Today I went to San Simeon to look for a rock. I had a fabulous day on the coast as a result: whales spouting in the distance, pelicans overhead, the absolute tiiest sand dollar I have ever seen ( about the size of a tip of a pencil eraser), wonderful cool sunshine, waves craching on rocks, and a surprise cave exposed by tide out...! I realized that my hunt for a rock a day may lead to unexpected wonders.

I chose this rock today,  because I like its coloring as well as its jagged weight. It measures approx 4 1/2" at widest, and weighs approx 1 lb 14ounces. Whee!

Rock 10: Gradual Rock ~ July 30 2015, Cambria CA

This was a difficult day for choosing a rock. I went to a beach that has so many different colors and types of rocks that I wanted to gather a bunch to photograph, but decided to stick the the program and select just one. My cousin went with me and photographed the selection process:

Sifting through small stones on the beach

 Which one should I choose?

These would make a nice group of rocks

Today's rock is a rock with levels of gradual wear. It was not the prettiest rock I found nor the most unusual, but I knew it was Rock#10, and picked it up for the project. It measures approx 1 3/4" long.

Then we played with the rocks.....:

Rock 9: Cayucos Rock ~ July 29 2015 ~ Cayucos CA

Today I went down the coast a bit to find my rock for the day. On one of the beaches in Cayucos, I found large boulders of densely green rock and longed to drag one home. I did find a chunk of them, however, and took it for my rock of the day. It measures approx 4 1/2" and is very jagged.

Rock 8: Centrally Grown Rock ~ July 28 2015

My favorite place to go for a cup of coffee and a Rosemary olive oil baguette is called "Centrally Grown" and is on Hwy 1 in Cambria. Organic hand-created chairs of all sorts of materials are scattered about on the grounds, along with plantings of vegetables and flowers. It is across from the ocean, and this morning the fog was wonderful to watch. One area outside is covered in small stones. Of course I had to stack some of them, and the small stacks are well camouflaged among the rest of the rocks. When I found this rock with its variety of embedded "gems", I knew it would be my rock of the day. Measures approx 1 1/2"across widest area.

Rock 7 ~ Black Lines Rock ~ July 27 2015 ~ Cambria CA

Today Jan and I stopped at Moonstone Beach for a short walk and a long nap to the sound of the ocean. The waves were large enough today that there were surfers down the way. I scrambled down to look for my daily rock and was tempted by large smooth boulders, but decided not to rob the shore of their beauty. So I chose a small stone that has an assortment of black lines on it, which I find satisfying to my sense of abstraction. The rock measures approx 1 3/8" longest length. It is quite smooth and slightly sage in color.

Rock 6: Peacock Rock ~ July 26 2015 ~ Moss Landing CA

For my rock choice today, I purchased a small one from a vendor at the Antique Fair in Moss Landing Ca. I searched through the bins of unusualand colorful pieces, but was most enchanted by what he called a "peacock rock". It glimmers in the light. It measures approx 1 1/4" at longest points and it cost me one dollar.

Rock 5 ~ Corner Lot Rock ~ July 25 2015

I found this rock in the empty corner lot in Salinas, California. This lot has been empty for years, as the owners vowed to leave it wild after the City demanded they keep it up. I chose this particular rock because it is actually a very light lavendar color with a white squiggle. It measures approx 1 1/2" at longest points. Sweet little rock.

Rock 4 ~ San Simeon Rock July 24 2015

Today my friend Jan and I went up the coast a bit to San Simeon for my rock. There were two I chose but decided on this one because of its light grainy color and smooth oval shape. It measures approx 3 5/8" longest point. There was a dead seal on the beach which was very sad.

Rock 3: White Line Rock ~ July 23 2015

I found this rock just minutes ago in Cambria, CA. Of course I loved it immediately with its lovely green and the striking white stripe on it. It measures approx 2 3/4" aat farthest points. A nice addition to my Rock-A-Days!

Rock 2: Yard Rock ~ Cambria California

I found this rock in my yard today. I love smooth round rocks that are somewhat flat. What drew me to this one is the variation in content: different colors, bits, textures. It measures approx 3  7/8" long at the widest area.

Rock 1: Tar Rock July 21 2015

A Rock A Day:

Today I decided to collect a rock a day, label it, photograph it, draw it in an altered book, write about it, and post it on a blog! This first rock from Cambria is the rock that inspired my Rock A Day for 365 Days project. I have been told this is oil, not tar.
