This slice of rock is quite thin and also has a lot of shine like Mica in it. Very cool. Measures approx 3" but is only approx 3/8" thin.

I think of it as a star. It has mica chips that shine. The rest is history. Measures approx 1 3/4".

This rock is like the Coat of Many Colors. It has gorgeous coloring and mica glitter as well. I found it on a hike up a canyon along a stream in Palm Springs today. It is a beaut! Measures approximately 1 1/2".

This line runs exactly on a diagonal! It is a clear white line or band. Rock is approximately 1 1/8". 

Rock 277 ~ After Teatime Stroll Rock ~ April 26, 2016

I had my first "tea" today. it was lively, with home made scones and lemon curd and fresh berries and whipped creme. There were biscuits and cheeses and of course tea.  I went for a stroll afterwards and found my rock of the day. I put it against a lovely pattern that reminds me of the pretty English teacups we drank from. Rock is approximately 2".

This is almost just solid soft gray, but it has a few little ghost areas on it. Whooooo. Measures approximately 3/4".

There is something about this one that reminds me of a planet -- the stripes that are subtle around it in lightly varying shades, the odd holes and mounds here and there, and the size. it is very large. Measures approximately 4 1/2" across.

And so I ask you: How representative of the Earth is a rock? 
I say: Very!

This one is a reddish purple tone with two thick white bands, and measures approximately 1". I do not know how many of these you would have to put side by side to make it around the Earth...but someone out there will figure it out....

Today I finally went to a doctor to see about my sore ankle. They took X-rays but found nothing unusual. The ankle is swollen, however. The doc said to limit my walking (a sad limitation for me) and when asked, he said I could wrap it if I thought it would help. So he wrapped it. 
This rock has a bit of a wrap formed by the two lines and a large toe sticking out. It reminds me of my ankle. Measures the size of two large big toes.

Bought a box of rocks this morning at one of my favorite junk places. It is full of these rocks that have rings around them. Legend is that they are wish rocks, and once your wish is granted, you pass the rock on to someone else. I have not made my wish on this one yet. Measures approx 2".

I walk to the post office in my home town almost every day. Today I spied a nice rock in the ground there and decided it is a perfect selection for today's post! It is a bit heavy and I wonder if it has a lot of iron in it. Measures approximately 2 1/2".

At first I thought of a piece of candy -- my favorite brand, See's, and the one I like is a rectangle shape. This does not look like a piece of candy though.it is approximately 1 1/4".

It is a very sandy feeling rock -- lots of grainy texture. On the back is a peculiar trio of round clear spots, as if this rock had been glued on to something else. Measures approximately 2.5 inches.

Found in a parking lot in Los Alamos, little town of my ancestors. Measures approx 1 1/8" and is extarordinarily light.

One of my favorite poets is Pablo Neruda. One of the collections of his I enjoy of his is Odes to Common Things. Check it out. The connection here is that the trick is to see beauty in common things...like this common rock.....measures approx 2".

There I was, looking around an old parking lot area near the school where I used to teach, and I found this out of place gem. I wonder if someone misses it. Well, now it is famous. Measures approximately 1" and has quite a polish.

Rock 262 ~ Golf Rock ~ April 11, 2016 ~ Claremont CA

My friend talked about the golf tournament yesterday on our walk this morning. There were a total of 4 hole-in-ones made, and by 3 different golfers. This sounds extraordinary even to me. I don't care much about golf. But perhaps the conversation led me to select a golfball-ish rock for today's post. Measures approx the size of a swollen golf ball.

I toured a friend's farm today. I admire great neat rows of vegetable  garden and an orchard of various fruit trees. I admire raising animals and eating fresh eggs. This farm had it all.  It is a lot of work that I wish I could do some day. This rock is from the farm today. It is approximately 2 7/8".

Rock 259 ~ Uncommon Good Rock ~ April 8, 2016 ~ Claremont CA

There is a little gem of a place  I visited today in Claremont that is tucked away on some land between a church and some residents. it is an earth structure that supposedly withstands even a tornado (I have my doubts abut this, despite repeated assurance). Artist Sheila Pinkel did some of the tile work and the mural there. It houses the local business known as Uncommon Good. They take in produce from many local farmers and sell it to consumers, and they have all sorts of events. A lovely stroll around garden. I liked it. I support this kind of business.  

I found this rock today nearby, and it is beautiful. I named it for my day's experience. Measures approximately 4".

I would not ever hunt a wild animal as long as I didn't have to for survival. I would prefer to hunt rocks for fun. This rock is approximately 2 1/8" and is fun to write on. 

Rock 257 ~ Contrast Rock ~ April 6, 2016 ~ Claremont CA

One of my favorite excursions happens to be down the street a few blocks. it is an art installation called "Skyspace" by James Turrell. Twice a day it exhibits the color contrasts as it lights a ceiling area and we see the contrasting color of the sky though a hole. Look it up. This rock has contrasting colors -- Black and White -- and I put it on an acid yellow paper because I enjoyed the intensity of color at Skyspace just this evening. Rock is approximately 3 inches.
