This is my ghost rock for Halloween. Boo!

Here it is in its earthly carnation. It measures approximately 
2 5/8".

This rock could have been used for a tool if it had been in the right place at the right time. I can just imagine a little worn indentation in it from someone grinding acorns. has the right look and right texture for it. A bit small for it though....measures approximately 3".

I was trying to think of all the associations I know having to do with rocks...and love this combination from childhood games: rock paper scissors. Think I will paint some paintings around that title for my next show.

Rock 98 ~ MISSING ~ October 28 2015

This rock went missing for 3 days and was found and labeled and photographed. Your patience is appreciated! Here it is:

MISSING: One Rock
              Black and Gray with White flecks - possibly Granite
              Measures approximately 1 1/2" across I think.
              No reward offered but gratitude will be forthcoming.

I picked up my rock of the day early this morning. I placed it in a secure bag and brought it home. Now it is MISSING. I am posting this MISSING picture of it, hoping the word gets out and the rock gets returned/found...will post photos of such at end of post when it returns.

I spotted this while on my walk this evening, and picked it right up. I know it is just cement stuck on a rock but I love the way t looks. Reminds me of ocean crustaceans on a sea rock. Measures approximately 2 5/8". 

Rock 96 ~ Swoop ~ October 26 2015, Claremont CA

I found this in a planter full of rocks at my house. I don't know where it came from but the planter has a nice selection for my rock-of-the-day postings! Delighted to find this unusual amalgamation of color and texture in one piece today. The design makes a swoop. I think the white line is actually as water line from when we used to get rain.....

This rock stands on end and measures approx 1 1/2" tall.

Rock 95 ~ Beagle Head Blank ~ October 25 2015

OK maybe I am stretching it a bit but this rock looks like a perfect blank to make a Beagle's head...just needs some ears and features...woof! Measures approximately 4 1/4" and it is very heavy by the way.

Rock 94 ~ Hump Rock ~ October 24 2015 Claremont CA

I found this beauty in my neighborhood and picked it up quickly. It is a dark gray and has some sparkly gray bits in it as well. And there is even a faint white line running through it. 
Shaped like a hump and approximately the width of a checkbook......

Rock 93 ~ Beach Stone ~ October 23 2015

This is another beach stone from my collection at home. I continue to raid my collected stones in lieu of finding rocks in Claremont....I am so attracted to their smooth worn quality. This one is small and light gray and almost round. It is approximately 7/8" ...a typical button size.

My friend Jan gave this rock to me for my posting today. Most of my friends try to help me with rocks...and I find that very charming.
This one is a nice change from the rocks I find on the ground here - this one is smooth and more contrasting in its components. Measures approximately 2 1/4" across.

I have been wanting to do some Mandalas and when I found this rock tonight I was inspired to paint one right on it. Then I stared at it for awhile and so here I present it.

Rock 90 ~ Marbly ~ Claremont CA October 20 2015

This rock was in my stash in my art studio and I have no clue what I thought when I stashed it. But it is a lovely white -- kind of a marbled white with a pink blemish. I thought it would look pretty in a bowl of lemons, but it was not particularly a good match. It is pretty all on its own. It measures approximately 2 1/8". 

Rock 89 ~ Gray Day Rock ~ Claremont CA ~ October 19 2015

One of the very rare days we had some rain in Southern California...and some gray skies. This is a gray rock to match, grayer than the photo color shows....The green background is like the green that could be here if it would rain some more. Rock measures approx 3".

Rock 88 ~ Eeny Meeny Rock ~ October 18 2015 ~ Claremont CA

When I was a child, we had several ways to decide who got to "go first" in any of the myriad of games we loved. One was for all to put their two fists in, creating a group circle of fists, and for the designated "leader" to count off as she/he hit each fist, "One Potato, Two Potato..." etc., until it was "8 potato MORE". Whomever was landed on got to go first. We also used the "Eeny Meeny Miny Moe" rhyme, to the same purposes. As we grew older, guessing the number the "leader" had in mind, or a coin flip was the usual determining factor.

Tonight it was already dark outside when I went out hounding. So I found a spot with a number of rocks and reached down and took the first (medium sized) one I felt...I didn't say a rhyme to select it, but it felt like the old Eeny Meeny choice all over again. 

I present this rock that was selected to become an Internet celeb'. Measures approximately 2 1/4" across and still has a bit of Claremont dirt clinging in the crevices:

Rock 87 ~ Orphan Babies ~ October 17 2015 ~ Claremont CA

I stepped out onto my doorstep to find three baby rocks in a bundle on my porch with a note inside. I immediately adopted. 

So my selection for today is one of the three. Very white, with a powdery surface, sharp edges. Measures approximately 1 1/8". 

Rock 86 ~ Small Round ~ October 16 2015 Claremont CA

It's pretty small. Very smooth --could slip into or out of a pocket easily. Could hibernate for days there without being discovered. I used to keep such a rock in a skirt pocket. Was always fun to find it there. Even through washings. 

Measures approximately 3/4".

Rock 85 ~ Wafer Monument Rock ~ October 15, 2105 ~ Ontario CA

I found this incredible wafer thin tall rock in an antique store in Ontario today. I wasn't even looking. It is a gray and white and sparkly speckled composite, and someone has flattened and polished one edge so it stands up.
Stands approximately 3 1/4" tall and is approximately 1/2" thick at the thickest.

Rock 84 ~ Wet Rock ~ October 14 2015 Claremont CA

I probably found this rock up the coast originally, but it has been living in Claremont for awhile and I discovered it today. It was a jagged dull dark color so I thought I would wet it and voila: the deep green came out nicely. Measures approximately 2 1/2".

I guess I pretty much find rocks wherever I go. Sometimes I just put them in the car and find them later. I found this one in the little cache above the radio today. I knew it would be my #83 post. I wonder if the red means there is a lot of iron in it. Measures approximately 2 inches.

Rock 82 ~ Jellybean Rock ~ Claremont CA October 12 2015

Today I started sorting a large box of buttons I had acquired somewhere. This means cutting attached threads, tossing out loose snaps, pins, and other debris often found in an old button box, and then making piles of buttons according to material used. Sometimes I find fun and unusual things in these stashes...and today I found my rock of the day! Good thing, because frankly it is still waaaay too hot outside to go hounding..... This one is about the size f a large jellybean. Looks kinda like one, doesn't it? Wonder how it tastes.

Rock 81 ~ Beach Stone ~ Cambria CA October 11 2015

This fine morning, I had coffee at Centrally Grown in Cambria - my favorite coffee -- and I walked down to the beach across from it. The sand there is very black. The waves were surfing waves and riders were already dotting the ocean front. 
This rock was an immediate find -- it was a shiny black when it was wet, and I picked it right away. Measures approximately 1 1/8".

Back to the ocean, where joyously round smooth rocks abound! However I was most struck by this one with the slash of whites across one end. Rock measures approximately 2 inches across.

Rock 79 ~ Creature Castle ~ Oct 9 2015 Claremont CA

I continue to raid my own stash of rocks I have collected. It is far too hot outside to go a-hounding. 

This is one of my favorites as it was likely a castle for many living creatures. It is very light weight and very white. I love it. Measures approximately 4" and has too many holes for me to count!
